Election Latest

Election results confirmed...Delegate calls 'Special Election'...

The Election Commission of The South Pacific have confirmed that the provisional results now stand and all members are duly elected into office...The term of office is 3 months and work will begin immediately to address the outstanding issues that have arisen during the election period...

Due to no candidates running for either of the positions of Minister of Intelligence or Minister of Defence, the Delegate, following close consultation with the Cabinet & Election Commission, has taken steps to hold a 'Special Election' rather than appoint an individual: "...I decided to run this as a special election for the simple reason that whilst I had thought of candidates, I don't believe it should solely be my choice who will protect you. This position requires the trust of the whole region, not just the delegate..." commented the Delegate.

In a move that sees the two vacant ministries combined into the Ministry of Security for the remainder of this term. It is anticipated that a review and discussions will be held within the Assembly towards the end of the term to guage member opinion regarding the performance and suitability of the interim Ministry of Security...

At the time of going to press, no candidates had put themselves forward, but it is hoped that this combined position will attract more interest.

The Delegate said; "...I can't stress enough that this is a temporary measure. Hopefully by next election there will be more interest in both positions, so we won't need to extend this again, but that is dependant on you, the people of this assembly. I have always said that if you want to see change, the best way is to stick your hand up and volunteer - run for election and serve this region to the best of your abilities..."

More news on the special election as candidates declare themselves...
